Everyone knows that having antivirus protection is one of the most important security measures on a PC. But even thought there are some great free antivirus options out there, sometimes they can actually turnout to be less antivirus and more virus.
As software systems expert Bryan Pendleton has written on his blog, fake antivirus programs are the most common form of scareware. Some of these programs will be advertised as free antivirus software, which users then download and install, before they are prompted to pay for the service and suddenly suffer a slow computer, among other things,
The problem with these "free antivirus virus" downloads is that they can show up anywhere, and have recently been particularly prominent on Google Images. In fact, prominent internet security blogger Brian Krebs commented in May 2011 that Google's image search has been a scammers playground for fake antivirus downloads.
While avoiding image searches may be one option, it is not a long-term solution to the problem. What may be is considering the type of free antivirus program and doing research before downloading it. Opting for a quick fix when panicking can lead to accidentally getting a free antivirus virus download instead of the real deal, but being thorough will help protect against it.
If an established free antivirus program like AVG Free Antivirus or avast! Antivirus do not cut it for you, try to look for programs using reputable software websites. That way you can be sure you are not downloading a fake antivirus program, and may even be able to compare different free options.
